Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing tropical storms stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of super-typhoons striking the islands has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
